How to create a cohesive Instagram feed

Long gone are the days on Instagram where you used to snap a quick picture on your phone, write a sentence for a caption and click upload straight away. There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes to create a consistent and aesthetically pleasing feed, here are some of my tips on how to create just that.

CHOOSE YOUR AESTHETIC 〰️

The best way to find out what aesthetic you would like for your Instagram feed is by simply looking for inspiration. What do your favourite feeds look like? What do they have in common? A great way of putting together your ideas is to save any images you like from IG feeds as well as other places such as Pinterest etc and create a moodboard. This will give you a better visual representation as to what you would like your overall aesthetic to be.

CREATE A BRAND COLOUR PALETTE 〰️

Creating an aesthetic on your feed will be 10x easier when you have your brand colours aka a consistent colour palette to follow. If you have all your design elements in place for your brand then you will have the exact codes for each colour you use across your logo, website etc. If you don’t… not to worry! You can download a free eye-dropper tool as an extension on your browser to be able to get the correct HEX colour codes to use throughout your brand graphics and stories.

USE THE SAME FILTERS 〰️

A great way to make sure your feed is looking consistent and like a dreamy moodboard is to use the same filters on each photo. I love to use VSCO for my photos as they have a feature where you can ‘copy edits’ from the previous photo and easily ‘paste edits’ on new images. Once you have your filters and worked out what you like to tweak, it’s as simple as copy and paste.

BRANDED GRAPHICS 〰️

This is one you’ll either love or hate, think marmite. Branded graphics are great for testimonials, quotes etc. as well as breaking up the feed with something different other than just photos. Some people like to have them break up the feed and they can look great, but they can also look too much and too structured. Find a good balance. They are incredibly easy to create either on your phone using apps such as Adobe Spark or (my favourite) Canva on your desktop.

MAINTAINING YOUR AESTHETIC 〰️

Your aesthetic doesn’t just stop on your Instagram feed. Make sure you are using similar brand colours and fonts over on your stories. This might be difficult if you create your stories straight in Instagram, but you can easily create stories using online software such as Canva where you can upload your brand fonts and colours so that it keeps your aesthetic consistent.
